Its worth sharing with you the exam board moderator's comments, which set out where marks have been altered (most marks above 80 were brought down, the rest largely untouched):Work from the Centre was well presented and detailed comments aided the moderation process, thank you.In brief:
The assessment criteria were generally applied within the tolerance allowed for this component. However, marks awarded for construction and evaluation were over-generous at the top end of the Centre's order of merit and this has necessitated an adjustment in order to bring the Centre into line with the agreed standard.
Candidates had clearly engaged with their selected briefs, with focused research and planning conducted. There was some strong evidence of understanding of film grammar, though some productions would have benefitt
ed from a greater variety of shot types which would have helped in the editing of their productions.
The magazine review of candidate 30xx was problematic as it was unclear whether all the images used were original as required by the specifications (page 34). The Centre is advised to ensure that candidates include evidence on their blogs of all pre-cropped and manipulated original images and that if all original material is not used this is reflected in the marks awarded.
Evaluations did address the required questions, though use of digital technology and ICT to present answers was a weakness in much work. At the top end of the submission candidates demonstrated proficiency in this respect, as indicated by some of the Centre's comments. In order to achieve level 4 for this aspect of their work candidates must demonstrate excellence in the use of technology, for example director's commentaries of film productions in answer to question 1; and video or audio clips of audience feedback.
It's been a pleasure to moderate the Centre's work.
- there must be greater use of ICT to present the Evaluation, eg director's commentary and additional use of video to analyse aspects of your work (in the style of DVD extras)
- print work needs clear evidence that images are your original images; this needs before and after shots of an entire photo and then the extracted image, plus the semi-cropped in-between stage
- the concept of coverage is clearly utterly crucial: multiple takes of the same shot, from different angles and framing, leads into shot variety
- this isn't mentioned, but I know in many cases the Eval largely ignores the 2 print texts; these must be referred to all 4 questions
The deadline for all A2 resubmissions is the Wednesday after we return from Easter hols (21st April), though the earlier the better!!!Equipment will be in heavy rotation with AS - the quicker you get moving on any reshoots the better.
For those of you who didn't submit in January, its worth discussing marks received with your peers to get a sense of where you might be on the grade front.
Your one and only last chunk of class time for this will be Friday 26th, as many of your colleagues will be attending a whole-day ICT coursework catch-up; for 13D (I see 13A for 2 periods that day), you can also ask questions on this over lunchtime. Please think of quite specific questions beforehand; narrow down the particular issues or areas you're unsure of - and make sure you've thoroughly checked over key codes and conventions of the various texts before asking me anything on those!!!
